FEATURED SPEAKERS:

To mark three years of the Youth Astronomy Apprenticeship the MKI Education and Outreach Group hosts a 2-day conference on science programs for older youth in out-of-school time. The conference will take place on November 19th (8am - 8:30pm) and 20th (8am - 4pm), at the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research at MIT.
About 50 people are invited to attend the conference. Conference participants will represent community-based organizations, informal science education organizations, arts centers, science museum and out-of-school time providers who are working with older youth (14 -19) and are interested in making new, effective science learning opportunities available to youth in this age group. More information about the conference schedule and agenda is posted here.
We will share experiences from the YAA program to introduce the YAA model, a successful example of how to promote science learning for both academic enrichment and skill building and positive youth development. Documentation and resources to implement the model will be made available to all participants.
Key aspects of the YAA experience will be used to communicate the importance of, the need for and the opportunity to support a well-rounded education for older youth, especially those from underserved communities. Conference participants will use these materials to discuss strategies that effectively engage older youth from underserved groups in science learning and skill developing activities. Proceedings and action items from the discussion groups will be published in an advocacy paper to be shared with the ISE and OST communities and policy makers.
Registration is closed.
